The Qualifying Process
To qualify as a driving instructor you need to pass three exams, aptly named parts 1, 2, and 3 as briefly
explained below
Part 1 Theory
This is in two parts- a multiple choice touch screen
exam consisting of 100 questions lasting 90 minutes split in to four bands:-
1. Road Procedure 2.Traffic signs,signals,car control,pedestrians,mechanical knowledge 3.The Driving
Test, disabilities and law 4.Publications and Instructional techniques
and a Hazard Perception Test consisting
of 14 video clips each lasting a minute with 15 main hazards spread throughout the clips. Each hazard is worth a max
of 5 points. Both parts must be passed at same test appointment to gain an overall pass result.
The
passmark for the theory is 85% but you must gain a minimum of 80% in each band to pass. The Hazard passmark is 57 from a possible

Part 2 Driving Technique
This consists of an eyesight
test and the driving test. Before the test begins you will need to answer questions on basic vehicle safety. The test
lasts about 60 mins during which you will need to show the ability to drive to a highly competent standard, complete
several manouvres and commit no more than six driver errors and no serious or dangerous errors.
Part
3 Instructional Ability
This lasts for 1 hour but is split into two 30 minute slots both of which must
be passed on same exam.
The examiner will take the part of a pupil at novice and then partly trained standard
and you will need to pitch the level of your instruction to the standard of the pupil being played.
The examiner
will give you a preamble at the beginning to paint a picture of the pupil and will also choose the subject that you will be
teaching him for each slot
